André Butzer stops at Gio Marconi until 10.01.2009

From Thursday 12th November, Gio Marconi gallery, the highlight of Milano, located at Via Tadino, hosts the solo exhibition of André Butzer (Stuttgart1973-).

Ten canvases of huge dimensions -exhibited on the gallery groundfloor- prolong the synthesis between abstract and figurative, rendered by his thick, material and in layers painting. The artist, however, reveals: "The so called abstract and figurative paintings are just interchangeable to me because they have legitimated one another".

Recalling the trauma of history, Butzer decided deliberately to move his studio to Rangsdorf, South of Berlin, in a former airplanes factory once used by German Air Force and then by the Russian one. The reason why this choice became a fact has to be retraced at his former tough childhood spent in the territories occupied by American forces. It is then true that only what causes pain memory keeps. Nietzsche made a significant remark about the relationship of violence, pain and creativity. From this perspective it is not surprising the chaotic violence emerging from the colours and their mixture. Chaos both hyper realistic – or hope realistic - proposes a new order of things, a new landscape and langscape also, so that things through art are offered in the way they should be and not as an accidental mimesis of extrovert life.

Some of works present a monochrome foreground made by different tones of grey, on which cross signs and geometrical forms with strong and sprightly colours can be encountered. Whereas, in other canvases, intense colours mix themselves into just hinted characters and hidden geometries. There are also appeared fantastic characters in cartoon style named 'Friedens-Siemense' that wander in fictious sceneries made by exuberant colors and that shape a bond of affinity with new abstract works. Moreover, the political role art can play is introduced by a symbolized way.

André Butzer seems to slightly recall the bigs of Outsider Art. He rejects any exact concept as futile stigmatization and combines spontaneity with originality of Expressionism. His intersubjectivity arousing from Art Brut, 'Fine Art' and Hyper realism is characterized by colors entwined in an intense and a violent manner.

Just for the record, in 2006 GioMarconi had hosted the first solo of André Butzer titled N-Leben. The exhibition's path focused on the life of an imaginary city called Nasaheim, where Butzer tried to represent the most obscure and bright aspects of German and American history. Last March the same gallery hosted the collective exhibition 'Kommando Giotto di Bondone' wanted and curated by Butzer himself, where a group of artists using different styles inspired itself to Giotto di Bondone as a precusor.

On 27th November 2008, Xippas Gallery is going to host André Butzer in Athens, so we are looking forward to meeting him in person.
